Riddle/Thirteen

I am of value only when given away
I am a burden if kept into old age
But sorely missed if taken too soon
I am innocent, naïve, and intangible
I am a prize when coupled with beauty
But a shame if paired with plainness
I am called prudish if protected
I am called slatternly if squandered
But possessed and relinquished concurrently
